This is a series by Jasper Fforde; the first one is called "The Eyre Affair".

Basically, it's about a detective named Thursday Next, it's set in an alternate reality, and she works for a place called "SpecOps" where she polices people trying to forge great works of literature, checks the authenticity of newfound "classics" and similar things. It makes reference to literature that the author has read all through the book, and the character of Thursday is realistic enough to sympathise with. Although named a bit un-creatively. >.>

There are references to all sorts of things in our world, and they're all brought together obviously (but deliberately obviously, not see-through-plot obviously) and skillfully enough that it still makes a story - with amazingly creative ideas all through.

My favourite one of the series (at least, of those that I've read) is the 3rd one. I loved them all though.

I wonder, is this an Australian writer? And do you know if these books have been published in the US?

They sound really cool though. I might have to try and track one down, might anyway.

lol I have no idea, sorry...I'll go check for you.

Well, in the front of it it has reviews from "The Daily Ireland" and "New York Times" which suggests it's available outside Australia...Oh, and it says it was first published in Great Britain...which is kind of a giveaway >.<

Also the author has a website (I would check it out myself but my computer has a nasty habit of crashing if you open too many windows). www.jasperfforde.com

I hope that helps if you want to track one down.
